Diego lifted the trunk lid. The smaller trunk, nestled inside, was a dull gray. Diego snapped open the locks and raised the lid.

“There they are,” he said.

They were in the parking lot of the hotel, but nobody passing by would pay any attention to what the trunk contained, nor would they recognize the warheads for what they were unless they were the proverbial rocket scientists.

Cylindrical bullet-shaped objects about ten inches long, made of bright stainless steel. Pike whistled. He lifted one from its protective foam and placed his left hand near the nose. He felt the weight right away, the object heavy, the surface so smooth he had no proper grip. He held on as long as he could before propping the tube upright in the foam. The middle section was hollow, and his throat dried up. That could mean only one thing: the warhead was built to have the explosive charge in front and the section for a chemical agent directly behind.

When placed in the tip of a missile such as could be built using the tubes he and Elsa had picked up in San Francisco, the warhead would detonate as soon as it struck the target. The explosion would accelerate the chemical agent into the atmosphere, spreading it over a wide area.

Pike unscrewed the front section and looked at the cavity where the explosive charge should be. There was no explosive or trigger.

“We still have some parts to collect,” he said a little too coldly, placing the warhead back in the case.

“Indeed we do,” Diego said. “That’s what is waiting for us in Barcelona.”

Diego slammed the trunk. He had to return to his safe house. He told Pike and Elsa to enjoy the rest of the day because they would be leaving in the morning.

“I know the perfect place to go,” Elsa said, taking Pike’s hand after Diego’s sedan turned out of the parking lot.

“Where?”

“You like to dance, right?”

“Sure.”

She squeezed his hand. “Trust me.”

They went out for dinner and dancing. Pike put every ounce of energy into being present with Elsa, but in the back of his mind, he couldn’t help but wonder where they’d get the chemical component for the missiles, and what type of chemical agent it would be. It wasn’t like you could buy one on any corner.

His mission was becoming much more complicated than he’d anticipated.
